It was important for these designs to look as authentic as possible. I tried it with a satin stitch and it looked horrible. The hand technique of applique is to fold under the edges and hand sew in place. Of course you wouldn't be able to archive using a machine so I think I came up with an alternative. Using Wonderunder, which is simply a double sided iron on adhesive you can get the same look. You can buy Wonderunder at any fabric or quilt store. I do not recommend Heat and Bond because it gums up your needle. I also don't recommend spray adhesive since the goal is to prevent pulling and fraying.
